Views of the Lake Mansion
Kitchen
The kitchen has all the basics of a Victorian
kitchen as well as many fascinating gadgets. Wooden butter hands
were used to shape lumps of butter into squares, and a cube-shaped
metal object was set on the stove to use as a toaster. The pump,
originally located on the back porch, was later moved into the
kitchen. it supplied the kitchen with fresh running water.
The Lakes had one servant, to whom they referred
as the cook. The Chinese cook not only prepared meals, but also
did most of the cleaning and yard work. Tom was the first cook
hired. He slept in the wash house in the back yard.
The Lakes' phone was also in the kitchen. Jane
Lake purchased the telephone company as an investment and Alice
Thompson, her granddaughter, became Reno's first "hello
girl".
