Back Parlor

The back parlor is separated from the front parlor by sliding doors, above which is a hand-carved frieze board. These doors were kept closed to keep the front parlor ready for company and to conserve heat. The back parlor is equivalent to today's family room. The fireplace, which is made of brownish-yellow English salt brick tile, was mostly decorative. a wood stove was used in the winter. When it was stored for the summer, the fireplace was a backup for cold spells.
